Why Do My Light Bulbs Keep Blowing?
Published
· Volt East Group

Repeated bulb failures can be caused by the lamp itself, an unsuitable lamp-and-fitting combination, excess heat, or a fault in the fitting or electrical supply. A light going out does not prove the bulb has failed. If replacements keep stopping in the same place, the useful next step is to investigate the pattern—not keep buying more bulbs.
This guide is for householders in Romford, Havering and nearby Essex who want to understand what to note safely and when to ask for help. It is not a guide to opening fittings or working on wiring.
Stop using the affected light if there is a burning smell, scorching, crackling, visible damage or repeated tripping. Do not touch damaged equipment or try another bulb to test it. Arrange qualified electrical help. If there is smoke or a fire, get out, stay out and call 999.
Already replaced the same bulb more than once? Ask Volt East about a recurring lighting fault. Include your postcode, the room affected and what happened. We will confirm coverage and availability before arranging the next step.
Is it one bulb, one fitting or several lights?
Start with what you have already observed. You do not need to recreate the fault or move suspect bulbs between fittings.
One isolated failure: keep the packaging or model information. A failed lamp and a failed fitting are different problems, even if both leave the room dark.
Repeated failures in one fitting: tell the electrician that replacements have failed in the same location. Record roughly how long each lasted.
Several lights affected: say whether this happened together, in one room or across different rooms. Include any flickering or unusual changes in brightness.
A trip at the consumer unit: treat this as a separate warning, rather than assuming it is just another dead bulb. Read our guide to lights that trip the fuse box when switched on.
Three things worth checking in the product information
1. Is the replacement actually suitable?
A matching cap or base is not the whole specification. Check the fitting’s instructions and the replacement lamp’s stated type, voltage and permitted use. Never exceed the fitting’s maximum lamp wattage. For downlights, compatibility with any driver or transformer also matters. Electrical Safety First’s downlight guidance explains these selection checks.
If the label is hidden inside a fitting, do not dismantle it to find the answer. Existing packaging, a receipt or the manufacturer’s product page is a better starting point for your enquiry.
2. Can the lamp manage heat in that fitting?
LEDs still generate heat. A bulb that is unsuitable for an enclosed fitting can have a shorter life because heat cannot escape adequately. Philips Hue’s explanation of LED heat recommends avoiding enclosed fixtures unless the bulb is rated for them.
This is a product-selection point, not an instruction to remove covers, pull downlights out of ceilings or move insulation. If a fitting appears overheated, leave it unused and have it assessed.
3. Is there a dimmer or smart control involved?
Tell the electrician if the problem began after changing bulbs, replacing a dimmer or adding controls. Keep the model numbers where available. A dimmable LED still needs a suitable control arrangement; buying a more expensive bulb alone does not establish compatibility.
If the lamp flickers or drops out mainly at low brightness, our LED dimmer flickering guide covers that distinct symptom. A lamp briefly going dark should not automatically be described as permanently blown.
What can you do safely yourself?
Read the instructions and record symptoms. Only replace a lamp that the manufacturer identifies as user-replaceable, that you can reach safely, and where there are no warning signs. Switch off its electrical supply first and allow it to cool. For a portable table or floor lamp, unplug it before changing the bulb. Use the specified replacement; never force it into place. See Electrical Safety First’s lamp safety advice.
Stop if access is awkward, the lamp is broken, the holder looks damaged or you are uncertain. Do not open a switch, repair a holder, remove a ceiling fitting or test live parts. Repeated failures deserve investigation even when a new bulb temporarily restores the light.
Does this mean the house needs rewiring?
Not automatically. The right repair depends on the findings. Ask for an explanation of what has failed, what work is needed to put it right, and which recommendations are optional improvements. A lighting symptom alone is not enough to justify a whole-house rewire.
Electrical Safety First notes that the condition of an installation matters more than age alone. Keep fault diagnosis separate from a decision to redesign the room.
Lighting help in Romford, Havering and nearby Essex
Volt East’s local coverage includes Romford, Hornchurch, Gidea Park and Upminster, with suitable projects in nearby Essex subject to scope and availability. Check our service areas or send your postcode.
For a useful first conversation, include the fitting type, bulb model if known, whether it is dimmed, and how often the fault has occurred. A photo taken safely from floor level can help explain which fitting you mean. Do not remove anything to photograph wiring.
Enquire about your lighting problem. If replacement lighting is appropriate, Volt East can also discuss lighting installation and design options once the fault has been understood.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my LED bulbs fail so quickly?
Possible reasons include the lamp, heat conditions or incompatibility with the fitting or controls. The advertised lifespan does not diagnose your installation. Record the model and the failure pattern before buying more replacements.
Should I buy a higher-wattage bulb?
No. Increasing wattage is not a fault repair, and the fitting’s maximum rating must not be exceeded. Ask for help choosing a compatible replacement if the specification is unclear.
What if the lights flicker instead of failing?
That is a different symptom. Our flickering lights guide explains useful observations and warning signs. Do not dismiss flickering alongside burning smells, damage or tripping.
