LED Lights Flickering on a Dimmer? Advice for Romford and Havering
Published
· Volt East Group

LED lights that flicker when dimmed may have an incompatible lamp-and-dimmer combination or settings that do not suit the lamps. A dimmable label is only the starting point: the bulb, control and any separate driver need to work together. Flickering can also have other causes, so it should not automatically be blamed on the dimmer.
This guide focuses on lights that pulse, flash or drop out as you change brightness. If the problem happens without a dimmer or affects several rooms, start with our broader guide to flickering lights.
Safety first: smoke, sparks, a burning smell, crackling, scorching or an unusually hot accessory are not something to solve by adjusting brightness. Stop using the affected equipment, switch off only if safe, and seek urgent help. Never remove a dimmer faceplate or open a light fitting to investigate. If there is a fire, get out, stay out and call 999.

1. Are the LED bulbs actually dimmable?
Not all LEDs are designed for a conventional wall dimmer. Check the packaging or the exact model’s information rather than assuming any LED will dim. Philips distinguishes between bulbs intended for a compatible dimmer, products that change brightness using an ordinary switch, and smart lighting controlled through an app. These are different systems, not interchangeable labels. See Philips’ dimmable LED guidance.
Keep the packaging or model number when requesting help. A photo of the bulb box is more useful than describing it simply as “a new spotlight”.
2. Is the dimmer compatible with the lamps?
A bulb can be dimmable without working well with every dimmer. Manufacturer compatibility information matters, including for an older switch retained after a lighting upgrade. Philips publishes a compatibility list for its lamps; the appropriate list for your own products is the one to check.
Leviton also explains that LED lamps are not all engineered alike and can behave differently with different dimmers. Symptoms can include flickering, switching off while dimming or a delay before brightness starts changing. That is why replacing parts at random can leave the original problem unresolved. Read the manufacturer’s explanation of dimming behaviour.
3. Do the lights flicker only at low brightness?
This is a useful detail to tell your electrician. Some dimmers allow a minimum brightness setting to be adjusted to suit the connected lamps. Varilight identifies this as one possible way of addressing low-level flicker on its V-Pro products, alongside the appropriate operating mode. It is product-specific—not a universal reset sequence for every switch. See Varilight’s technical guidance.
Do not assume that turning the lights brighter proves the installation is safe. Describe the symptom and leave settings, compatibility checks and any fixed-wiring changes to someone competent to assess the system.
4. Did the problem start after changing bulbs?
Tell the electrician what changed, how many lamps are connected and whether they are all the same model. The dimmer’s permitted LED load and lamp-count limits should be checked against the exact manufacturer instructions. An incandescent wattage rating should not be treated as a universal LED allowance.
Varilight’s instructions illustrate why model details matter: limits and setup procedures are specified for the particular dimmer. Do not add resistors, bypass devices or extra lamps as a DIY workaround. Example manufacturer instructions for V-Com dimmers.
5. Does an LED flash even when switched off?
Some electronically controlled dimmers use a small standby current. Varilight notes that sensitive LED lamps can glow or flicker with certain touch or remote controls even when switched off. This is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis of your installation. Get the actual products checked; do not fit a suggested accessory without confirming suitability.
What can I check without opening anything?
Find the bulb or fitting model on its packaging, receipt or instructions.
Check whether it is described as dimmable and what control it requires.
Note whether all lights on the dimmer flicker or only one.
Describe whether the symptom occurs at low brightness, full brightness, startup or after switching off.
Tell us about recent lamp replacements or installation work.
Only photograph what is safely accessible. Do not pull downlights from ceilings, remove switches or expose wiring. If you do not know the dimmer model, say so; you do not need to take it apart to find out.

Frequently asked questions
Will any LED dimmer stop the flicker?
No. A control described as suitable for LEDs still needs to match the lamps, load and installation. Check the exact product requirements rather than buying on the label alone.
Do I need to replace every downlight?
Not necessarily. Establish the cause before agreeing to a replacement scheme. Ask the electrician to distinguish the immediate repair from any optional lighting improvements.
How much will it cost to fix?
The scope depends on the products, access and what investigation finds. Ask what the initial visit covers, how additional work is authorised and whether replacement parts are included. An online symptom description is not enough for a reliable fixed repair price.
